Album Review

Although Battle of the Ants is over 40 minutes long, it's classified as an EP; it finds Compression continuing to assemble their various strains of alternative metal into a coherent whole, mixing detuned metal riffs, white guitar noise, aggressive electronic programming, and moody atmospherics into one dark, pummeling vision. Their songwriting still dissolves into a focus on sonic textures from time to time, but overall, the EP demonstrates their growing assurance.

Baltimore-based alternative metal band Compression formed in the spring of 1993 around singer Greg Scelsi; guitarist Paul Joyce, bassist Michael Albi and drummer Lou later fleshed out the most long-standing line-up. The band released its first demo at the end of the year, with three more demos following through the fall of 1995. The first official Compression release, a three-way split disc with Last Rites and No Compromise, appeared early the next year, with the limited CD Our Sun Bleached Bones...
