Thomas Chapin's death from leukemia at the far too early age of 40 deprived the world of a saxophonist and flautist of extraordinary talent whose razor sharp musical intelligence and outstanding technique were not documented as often as they might have been on disc. This makes the appearance of this live recording from the North Sea Jazz Festival on July 15, 1995 by the great Chapin trio with Mario Pavone on bass and Michael Sarin on drums all the more important as a timely reminder of what a monstrously good player Chapin was. Whether negotiating the tight, funky curves of "Anima" or out-Rahsaaning Roland Kirk on flute on "Aeolus," or just blowing wild and free, Chapin was an exceptional musician, and it's thrilling to hear him again in full flight with such a superb rhythm section behind him all the way. Ride is 100 percent action and energy, a truly life-affirming experience.
