Album Review

Harvested from the historic cusp of his vital involvement with the John Kirby Sextet in the late 1930s, these two-dozen blues and swing recordings reissued by Timeless in 1998 find trumpeter Charlie Shavers backing vocalists Trixie Smith, Coot Grant and Wesley Wilson, Lether McGraw, Rosetta Howard, and Alberta Hunter. Shavers, whose expressive technique meshed perfectly with this kind of singing, is heard in the company of reedmen Sidney Bechet and Buster Bailey; pianists Lil Hardin Armstrong and Sammy Price; guitarists Ulysses Livingston and Teddy Bunn; bassists Dick Fullbright and Wellman Braud, and drummer O'Neill Spencer. Bechet's vibrant presence during the first half of this collection should serve as an invitation to explore his other collaborations with this exceptionally skilled trumpeter.
