Album Review

At the time of its 2001 release, Aberrations: 1981-1984 evened the score between Shriekback's full-length studio albums and their compilations, at seven. An underwear-drawer compilation of outtakes, B-sides, demos, and live material, the disc was certainly put together with the die-hard fan in mind. Therefore, the varied sound quality and varied overall quality of the songs themselves will appeal only to those with voracious appetites for Shriekback. As far as archival releases are considered, it doesn't fair too poorly at all. A limited-edition version of the compilation came with copies of 2000's Naked Apes & Pond Life.

Shriekback is not an easy band to classify. They borrowed heavily from funk but had a very different agenda; their music was more suited for contemplation than for parties. They combined synthesizers and drum machines with throbbing bass lines and unorthodox vocals to evoke a primordial world where the line between human and animal was blurred. The title of their fourth album, Big Night Music, might be the most succinct summation of their work: Shriekback's music was always an appropriate soundtrack...
