Indiana's Split Lip lay beneath a Midwestern sky and question the stars. They discover the four walls around them and try to make sense of what's in-between; coming to terms, from rage to celebration to tears. For the Love of the Wounded is indeed that evocative. It is music bred from early '90s hardcore that retains the style's metallic crunch but expands it into a driving melodic rock. Acoustic guitars, smart dynamics that switch between lush and tight, and literary lyrics that sting of political/self awareness all go along for the ride. For the Love of the Wounded is an original effort that retains some of hardcore's key characteristics — it is active not passive, honest not contrived.

Split Lip was probably the most important emotionally tinged hardcore band to emerge from the Midwest. Alongside Endpoint, Split Lip helped prove to an international audience that a band could effectively combine the chunky thrash of the coastal straight-edge hardcore scenes with the warm emotional depth of certain, more popular music, emotive drive, and political slant of D.C. bands like Embrace. Split Lip's songs were mosh-pit inducing, yet often elicited tears and scream-along empathy from audiences....
