Album Review

Chris Jasper returned to his R&B/soul/funk roots on Deep Inside after making his gospel music debut on Praise the Eternal. The singer/songwriter/keyboardist again performed all of the music and most of the vocals on this pleasant CD that stands as the best of his solo efforts. Highlights include the buoyant ballad "Deep Inside," the gentle "Cling to Me," the floating, fidelity-filled "There for You," "Forever," the thumpin' Motown-flavored "Nobody but My Baby," and a respectful remake of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." Some of the grooves are similar to "Between the Sheets," a classic slow jam Jasper co-wrote and performed as a member of the Isley Brothers, but without its lyrical steamy sexual overtones.

Any serious list of highly influential keyboardists in the soul/pop/funk field would have to include the Isley Brothers' Chris Jasper.
