Album Review

High as a Kite collects some of St. Johnny's independent work (just before a major-label bidding war swept them up to DGC) — the recordings, as one would expect, consist of the same melodic, Dinosaur Jr.-style indie-rock of the band's later releases, but with less-polished and pop-oriented songwriting and production. For those approaching the band from an indie perspective, the album might be preferable to the major-label work — for those coming from another direction, it should seem just as appealing as the other releases.

Alternative rockers St. Johnny formed in Hartford, CT, in 1991. The quartet -- Bill Whitten (guitar, vocals), Jim Elliott (bass), Wayne Letitia (drums), Tom Leonard (guitar) -- released a 7" record on their own label, Asthma Records, which gained enough attention to have Chicago's Ajax Records put out another single. The two singles of noisily melodic dirty punk rock led to a minor bidding war in late 1992, with DGC Records emerging as the winner. Caroline Records put out a compilation of the two...
