Album Review

What can one say about Drowningman without frightening the average hardcore listener? They redefine heaviness, and the way this quintet intertwines melody and metal guitars is unbelievable. Simon Brody's manic screeching is on the same level as the sound a cat makes when you run its tail over, but much more pleasing to the trained ear. To understand the incredible talent contained in these five young men, one has to be an avid listener to extreme hardcore, metal, emocore, and screamo (which is the combination of grindcore and emo). Drowningman has some very complex, frantic guitars and drums, which all combined together create some of the most insane music one can hear without digging to the very bottom of the charts to find the most brutal band out there. The group as a whole has really built on what they displayed on their first album, 1998's Busy Signal at the Suicide Hotline, adding more melody while still maintaining the screaming of a professional throat-killer. Most impressive is the twisted humor that the band has. With song titles like "A Quick Prayer to the Patron Saint of Dirty Rest Area Bathrooms and Clean Getaways" and "Black-Tie Knife-Fight," one can chuckle as they lose complete control of their body and slip into the tumultuous soundscape Drowningman produces. ~ Jason D.
