Album Review

Plezi is Patrick Saint-Eloi's third solo album after leaving Kassav'. Even without a full complement of horns and hand percussion, he still manages to deliver another of his state-of-the-art zouk releases. There are not many musicians in the zouk realm who can deliver consistently solid zouk albums without filler. His tempo and chord changes are what make his albums instant best-sellers. They don't deliver the boring sameness that is the bane of many zouk love albums. The sonics are very well mixed, with monster basslines. The title track is very laid-back, but the bass builds a fortress of sound. His licks are beguilingly simple, but rhythmically infectious. The last minute of "Enme Vou" is an example of a simple break that will stick in your head for a while. Listen hard and long to "Anvi Vi," a fine example of his chameleon-like mastery, with a nod to Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity." Not Lovetans, but still highly recommended.
