Birth Place and Burial Site, the six-song EP from As Hope Dies, is an energetic and strangely melodic aural assault. Where many of their contemporaries in the black metal world tend to mix their melodic passages with blinding thrash riffs, As Hope Dies approaches things with a twin-guitar assault reminiscent of vintage Iron Maiden. This use of power metal riffing helps the material greatly, as the barking-dog vocals have a memorable wall of guitars to attach themselves to. With a handful of grandiose, yet visceral, tracks, As Hope Dies delivers an excellent EP that does exactly what it should: It interests the listener in checking out the full-length album.

With all of its members having played for five to ten years, As Hope Dies was quick to receive the attention of music critics and labels.
