Album Review

Der Mann mit Dem Fagott, the autobiographical novel by singer Udo Jürgens (co-written with Michaela Moritz), was turned into a two-part TV movie in 2011, starring Jürgens himself alongside well-known actors such as Christian Berkel and Ulrich Noethen. Jürgens also wrote the music for the adaptation, which has been released as a two-CD soundtrack album. The first CD includes Jürgens' orchestral score and several songs, including new recordings of his classic songs "17 Jahr, Blondes Haar" and "Was Ich Dir Sagen Will," a number of jazz covers ("That Lucky Old Sun," "My Funny Valentine"), and "Valse Musette," a previously unreleased composition which Jürgens wrote for his father when he was 12 years old. The second CD, entitled "Reise Durch das Leben" ("Journey Through Life"), offers a collection of Jürgens songs spanning from the '70s to 2011, plus a live recording of "Wien" from 2001, and while none of these songs were featured in the movie, they are connected to the narrative.
