On the Run

On the Run

On the Run marks another growth spurt for siblings David, Lee Marie, and Seth Hostetter, collectively known as Children 18:3. The trio’s heady punk-pop attack and stalwart Christian faith have been constants since their debut. On their third album, they show development as songwriters, as well as a willingness to add a more reflective side to their brash persona. David and Lee Marie’s sweet ‘n’ soul harmonies remain a key element, as does Seth’s relentless drum-flailing. Tracks like “Moment to Moment,” “What About Justice," and “Holding On” surge and careen with abandon, while “All in Your Head” lays down a strutting groove with ‘70s hard rock overtones. “I Tried to Do the Right Thing” has the breakneck desperation of prime Hüsker Dü (with a sharper moral message). More surprising is the arrangement complexity of “Why Are You Afraid of the Dark,” a moody number featuring Blindside vocalist Christian Lindskog. “Always on the Run” also stands out for its thoughtful lyrics and techno-tinged sound. On the Run suggests that Children 18:3 are capable of more diversity than even their hardcore fans might expect.
