Album Review

Crystal Oscillations is a set of rhythmic electronica from Timeshard. The frantic and frenetic rhythms border on techno. To some folks, this qualifies as ambient or new ambient. This music is neither innocuous nor interesting, so it does not fit the widely accepted definition (as proffered by Brian Eno) of ambient music. There are artists performing in this style who do it much more creatively. This disc would qualify as an interesting selection from the cutout bin.

Gobber, Psi and Steve were friends in Liverpool, when they decided to form Timeshard in the late '80s as an experiment with first loops and found sounds at their home studio. The trio began organizing free local parties and became known as the area's first "live acid-house band." Gradually, the live show expanded outwards and across Great Britain, while their sound gained elements of ethno-techno, trance and dub. Timeshard also gained attention for their self-released, cassette-only albums, Who Pilots...
