Album Review

In 1986 Circle Records brought out a collection of recordings made during the year 1940 by Richard Himber & His Orchestra for Lang -Worth Feature Programs, Inc., a transcription service that sold studio recordings to radio stations for periodic airplay. Vocalists on these sessions were Ruth Vale and Del Casino; the featured clarinetist was Hank D'Amico, and the band's arrangements were devised by Deane Kincaide, who also wrote charts for Benny Goodman's orchestra. Intended for use as radio broadcast filler, some of these tracks run for less than two minutes. Most of the material consists of show tunes and songs associated with Hollywood movies. The longer selections allow for full interpretations of catchy numbers like Irving Berlin's "Louisiana Purchase," Jimmy Van Heusen's "You Think of Everything," Charles Tobias' beautiful "Trade Winds" and that lovely old melody composed by Richard Rodgers, "Blue Moon."
