Album Review

Another release from an ambitious Al Jolson fandom, this time parodying the art and graphics of Decca Records — not to be confused with the legitimate release of the same title, this CD contains 14 tracks that reveal just how elaborate Jolson's recordings and their attendant productions could be. Highlights include "Pretty Baby" and "For Me and My Gal," but everything here can pretty well be considered definitive about the artist.

In addition to releasing a string of successful records between 1912 and 1949, Al Jolson achieved pre-eminent stardom on Broadway, hosted several radio series, and became the first important figure of the sound-era of motion pictures. His performing style was brash and extroverted; he billed himself as "the world's greatest entertainer," and he was known for his slogan, "You ain't heard nothin' yet!"
