Album Review

Gangsters (aka the Chicago Gangsters) are natives of Akron, OH who recorded for the tiny, now defunct, family-owned Heat Records. "Life Is Not Easy" begins with an Earth, Wind and Fire flare then settles into a lilting but remorseful midtempo weeper; a guitarist adds tasty licks throughout. "Chuga Chuga" uses train references for its dancing beat on a song obviously written for a Soul Train's theme song contest; it didn't win. Slick and streetish "Wop that Wandy" is a funky dance floorer with an A-1 groove. The most unusual creation has to be "Smoke," with its spooky bass vocal and heady chart. The best arrangement goes to the unusual rendition of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life"; the teasing, tantalizing jazzy opening gets your undivided attention long before the first line is sung and the melody is recognizable, but uncharismatic male vocals weigh the song down. You'll have a hard time disliking the moving, tear-jerking "I Feel You When You're Gone"; everyone's experienced the hurting lyrics, the lonely nights and the pain the Gangsters passionately wail about. "I've Learned My Lesson," the last of the seven titles, resumes the journey down heartbreak road.
