After the introspective tones of grunge and shoegazing, Suede’s thrilling debut recut British guitar music with theatrical zeal and pop hooks. Unashamedly histrionic, Brett Anderson sings of sink-estate dramas and suburban sex tales while the intricate sparks flying from Bernard Butler’s guitar crystallise into feral glam-rock (“Animal Nitrate”, “Metal Mickey”) and anthems for the disaffected (“So Young”). However, it’s slow songs such as haunting suicide ballad “She’s Not Dead” that highlight their impressively formed depth and craft.
