Album Review

Pianist Astrid Cowan performs melodic and easy listening jazz that swings lightly in a boppish manner. This quintet date with other Los Angeles-based musicians has two of her originals, one by guitarist Ron Berman, and friendly versions of six standards, including "What Is This Thing Called Love?," "Blue Daniel," and "When Lights Are Low." Cowan, Berman, and trumpeter Jerry Rusch are the main soloists, with bassist Richard Simon and drummer Chris Wabich being fine in support. Nothing too unusual occurs, but the music is pleasing and well played.
