Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie’s poker-faced parodies may mock pop’s grand aspirations and randy attitude, but they’re also strong enough to demand repeat listens. Their debut album pulls together the best of their live musical skits—the Pet Shop Boys-aping "Inner City Pressure", the tongue-twisting ridiculousness of "Hiphopopotamus Vs. Rhymenoceros", the self-defeating soul spoof “The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)”—and brings them to fully realised studio life as the soundtrack to their HBO series. David Bowie fans are strongly advised to check out “Bowie” as a matter of some urgency.
