Album Review

The Pastels were riding a wave of creativity in the mid-'90s. Their album of 1995, Mobile Safari, is one of the bands best and "Yoga" is one of the standout tracks. The big, ringing guitars and rollicking beat wouldn't be out of place on a Teenage Fanclub record (which is fitting seeing as the Fannies were hugely influenced by the Pastels) and Aggi Wright's tender vocal sounds great surrounded by the background harmonies. The song comes in two flavors on the EP: the album track with Aggi's vocal or the track only available here with Stephan Pastel on vocals. The other two tracks are fine examples of the band's open-hearted sound. "Boardwalkin'" is a collaboration with Some Velvet Sidewalk's Al Larson that sounds nothing like a classic surf song but is somehow reminiscent of one just the same, complete with a typically woozy vocal from Stephan. "Winter Olympic Glory" is a slight Aggi-sung tune with a screaming guitar solo buried deep in the mix. The Yoga EP is not one of the Pastels' most essential releases but it is definitely worth looking for if you are devoted to the band's unmistakable charms.
