Album Review

Although Jamie Myerson's initial singles were quite good, the success of Listen, his full-length debut, still comes as something as a surprise. In essence, he's an American counterpart to Roni Size, finding a middle ground between layered, polished club music and progressive, rhythmically intricate jungle. Apart from Carol Tripp's appearance on "Rescue Me," there aren't many vocals on the album, but that doesn't mean it's inaccessible — the layers of intertwining beats and keyboards are more mesmerizing on their own, creating a provocative, fascinating debut.

One of the few American producers fluent in drum'n'bass during the early '90s, Jamie Myerson explored the more melodic (if not muzaky) side of jungle and trance, in league with fellow new-age breakbeat producers like Adam F. and E-Z Rollers as well as straightahead dream-house merchants Sash! and Robert Miles. Myerson recorded for 4 Hero's Reinforced Records from 1993 to 1995 before signing with an American, Josh Wink's Ovum Recordings, for a Columbia-distributed major-label contract. Growing up...
