About Andreas Vollenweider
Swiss harpist Andreas Vollenweider is best known as a key figure in the popularisation of new age music, but over time his work has incorporated touches of jazz, pop, world music, progressive rock, classical music and more. Born in Zürich in 1953, he became fascinated with the harp as a young man, but his maverick nature led him to fashion his own electro-acoustic instrument. Vollenweider released his first album in 1979, and he had some success in Germany with his next couple of records, but it was 1984’s White Winds that broke him through to American audiences. With a visually dramatic stage presentation replete with light show and fog machine, he became a successful global touring artist. Vollenweider earned a Grammy for his next album, Down to the Moon, worked with an international cast of guest musicians (including percussionist Badal Roy and guitarist David Lindley) on 1989’s Dancing with the Lion and recorded with singers (including Carly Simon and Eliza Gilkyson) for the first time on 1993’s Eolian Minstrel. Throughout his career, Vollenweider has never ceased seeking out new musical vistas.
