Neil Young joined Crosby, Stills & Nash in mid-1969, months after releasing his first album with Crazy Horse, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. ∙ Prior to inviting Young to join the band, Crosby, Stills & Nash approached Steve Winwood and The Lovin’ Spoonful’s John Sebastian, but both had other commitments. ∙ Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s second-ever live show took place in front of 400,000 people at the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Festival. ∙ Nash wrote “Our House” in an hour, inspired by an outing with then-girlfriend Joni Mitchell. ∙ The quartet’s 1970 debut, Déjà Vu, was a critically acclaimed commercial smash, hitting No. 1 on the Pop charts and producing three Top 40 singles. ∙ Déjà Vu has sold 7 million copies—more than every other album released by the band’s members, either individually or with each other. ∙ Young wrote “Ohio” after seeing Life magazine photos of the 1970 shooting of four Kent State college students, and the band recorded the song that same week after only one day of rehearsals. ∙ Each member of Crosby, Stills Nash & Young is a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, thanks to their solo careers or work with other bands.
