Haymarket Riot

About Haymarket Riot

One of the more obscure -- albeit fondly-remembered -- groups to emerge from the fertile southeastern Michigan rock scenes of the late 1960s, Haymarket Riot consisted of singer Jim Doe, vocalist/drummer Dennis Morales, guitarist Ron Shankleton, bassist Phil Rishe and keyboardist Ken Lush. Formed in the small town of Monroe under the name the Avengers, the group earned a local cult following through their regular performances at the local teen nightspot the Club, also playing countless weddings, roller-rinks and high school sock-hops. Initially honing a repertoire consisting primarily of British Invasion favorites, in time Haymarket Riot began writing their own original material as well; however, by staying in Monroe -- as opposed to relocating the greener pastures of the Detroit/Ann Arbor circuit -- the group never managed to attract the wide audiences necessary to guarantee them a shot at national success, and after issuing their lone single, 1969's "Leaving," they disbanded. ~ Jason Ankeny
