About Mass Order

A Baltimore-based duo of Mark Valentine and Eugene Hayes, who grew up listening to the O’Jays and soul standards. Mass Order scored a huge Autumn 1991 ‘hit’ with their gospel house cracker, ‘Take Me Away’, a popular but elusive disc. It was actually a bootleg which had been pirated from a DAT tape at New York’s New Music Seminar. It was eventually given a proper release (under its full title, ‘Lift Every Voice (Take Me Away)’) with remixes from the Basement Boys and Tony Humphries. As a footnote the bootlegging incident went to court, but the miscreants, David Cooper and William Lynch, still escaped justice. They were acquitted because they ‘did not know they were breaking the law’.
