About Potret

In the ‘90s pop landscape, female singers were expected to look pretty and sing (preferably sad) love songs. Enter Melly Goeslaw and her band Potret, who shook things up and left an indelible mark on the Indonesian mainstream. Pairing Goeslaw’s cheeky lyricism, expressive vocals and out-of-the-box video performances with Anto Hoed’s jangly, melodic guitar work, the band proved a winning combination. “Bunda”, a sparse, poignant piano ballad from 1997’s Potret II, is widely regarded as an anthem for mothers across Indonesia.
