About Reinhold Friedrich

German trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich made his debut at the Berlin Festival in 1982 with a performance of Berio's Sequenza X, and he went on to be a prize winner at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich in 1986. He was a member of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1983 to 1999, and in 1989 he began teaching trumpet at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe. Active in early music, Friedrich plays Baroque trumpet as well as the modern trumpet, and he has taught period techniques and practices. He has performed with many period and modern ensembles, including the Berliner Barock Solisten, the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées, Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra, Capriccio Basel, the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, the Vienna Academy Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. the Orchestre Philharmonique de la Radio France, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, among many others. He has given first performances of works by Peter Maxwell Davies, Hans Werner Henze, Wolfgang Rihm, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Rebecca Saunders, Adriana Hölszky, and Herbert Willi. Friedrich is the principal trumpet of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, as well as the artistic director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra Brass Ensemble. In addition to teaching in Karlsruhe, Friedrich is an honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Music. His album with the Royal Academy of Music Brass and the Juilliard School Brass, Gabrieli for Brass: Venetian Extravanganza, was released in 2018 on Linn Records. ~ Blair Sanderson
