Three-piece soul-jazz combo Soulive formed in Woodstock, New York, during the waning months of the 20th century. From the very beginning, the band has been celebrated for its malleability. Though a jazz-funk trio at heart, they dabble in everything from hip-hop and rock to bluegrass. Soulive became a force in the jazz world upon the release of their acclaimed 2001 Blue Note debut Doin' Something, the first of 11 straight charting albums. 2002's wildly diverse Next showcased vocal collaborations with Black Thought, Amel Larrieux, and others. 2009's Up Here juxtaposed the trio with a horn section, while the following year's Rubber Soulive -- a collection of Beatles covers -- crossed over from jazz to pop in Europe. After a five-year hiatus between 2012 and 2017, Soulive returned with Cinematics, Vol. 1 in 2017, and resumed touring and recording in 2021.
