About Victor Herbert

Victor Herbert (1859-1924) was born in Dublin, Ireland, but became one of the founders of the American musical theater. Following years of study and playing cello in Europe, Herbert emigrated to the United States with his wife, made a living as a band leader and conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony, and began composing his early operettas. By the turn of the twentieth century, Herbert had achieved modest successes, but the musicals Babes in Toyland and Naughty Marietta cemented his reputation. In addition to his theatrical scores, Herbert also composed concert music, including two cello concertos and several tone poems.
