William Basinski is an experimental composer, sound sculptor, and video artist. Throughout the '80s, he worked with tape loops, analog keyboards, and Mellotron, and assembled a formidable body of work. His first release, Shortwavemusic (1998), dated from this period. In 2001, he intended to create new masters of archival recordings, but the sound of their decay led to the four-volume The Disintegration Loops (2002-2003), which Basinski matched with his video footage of the World Trade Center, recorded on September 11, 2001 while on his roof. Basinski's releases kept flowing, and The Disintegration Loops were performed as part of the ten-year anniversary concert Remembering September 11. They were made part of the National 9/11 Museum's permanent collection. ~ Thom Jurek
