Dirty Mind is the sound of a musical polymath stepping into the dark side. Prince’s state of mind is epitomised by the title track, a driving rock riff as crafty and celebratory as it is licentious. The album’s skeletal, demo-like production only adds to the air of confidence, especially on “Gotta Broken Heart Again” and “Uptown”. Ever the mercurial ringleader, Prince manages to meld ’50s sock-hop sweetness to sticky rhythms on “When You Were Mine”, but the album peaks with “Head” and “Sister”, a double shot of gleefully scandalous funk.
