The New Jersey alt-rockers take a big leap forward on their first major-label album, marrying stadium-sized production to personal lyrics and huge pop-rock riffs to Misfits-style horror-punk imagery. Singer Gerard Way exorcises demons via the epic deal-with-the-Devil revenge tale the band builds, touching on the grieving process (“Helena”), lost love (“The Ghost of You”), the pain of being bullied (“I’m Not Okay”) and suicidal ideation (“To the End”). The soaring, powerful choruses and punchy rhythms make it clear that he won’t go down without a fight, a triumph in itself.
