Album Review

Cal Bennett is a talented soul-jazz saxophonist who sounds a bit like Eddie Harris when he plays an amplified tenor. Bennett emulates Grover Washington, Jr. a bit on soprano and alto (the grooves are similar to the ones Washington used to use), but is less interesting during two pieces in which he utilizes a "digital horn," which makes him sound completely anonymous. However, Bennett is strongest on tenor, and much of this music is both danceable and creative within the modern soul-jazz idiom. He shows strong potential for the future, particularly if he can discard the digital horn.
