Album Review

Just Sadistik Exekution's fourth full-length release in a decade-and-a-half, Fukk represents some of the most extreme, over-the-top metal being made — by anyone's standards, and that is pretty remarkable for a band this far into its career. The CD booklet — which shows pictures of self-mutilated forearms, a pit bull wearing a pentagram necklace, and numerous shots of the bandmembers in performance with blood dripping all over their bodies — gives some idea of the overall aesthetic at work. This was not a band that did things halfway. In fact, their incessant use of the word "fukk" throughout this album is one of the more conservative things about it. That said, this recording does an excellent job of bringing out the reckless intensity of the band's music: The drums are harsh, often sounding like jackhammers (especially in light of the ridiculously fast speeds at which they are often played), while the guitars are raw and suitably grime-caked, meshing well with vocalist Rok's scab-throated vocals. Two of the best songs, "Spiritual Dynamix" and "Sister Valerie," are actually old ones, dating back to the late '80s, while a couple of the (presumably) newer songs suffer from a bit of laziness in either the riff-writing and/or the lyrics. (The band has never aspired to quaint, high-class poetry, but after awhile, Rok's relentless cursing diatribes begin to feel like a shtick.) Those minor gripes aside, the performances here are anything but lazy, displaying a maniacal, unhinged type of energy that is rarely matched. Ultimately, that's what makes Sadistik Exekution special, and that would be the reason to buy this album.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Legitimate contenders to the claim of "world's most insane extreme metal band," Australia's Sadistik Exekution formed in the mid-'80s and remained steadfastly committed to playing the fastest, most violently over-the-top music they could throughout their career. In some ways old-school and in others nearly avant-garde, their style mixed together aspects of black, thrash, death, and doom metal, often played at incredibly fast speeds, while at others rendered at a nearly dirge-like crawl. The group...
