Rockferry

Rockferry

On her 2008 debut album, husky-voiced Welsh lass Duffy time-travels back to the ‘60s in a flawless homage to vintage soul, melding noir-pop atmospherics with Supremes-esque sass. On swelling ballad “Syrup & Honey”, she mines Ronnie Spector’s raspy, sugar-coated vocals, while the melodramatic “Hanging On Too Long” sees her nodding to Petula Clark. The title track shows off her impressive, reedy vocal range, and mega-hit “Mercy”, with its syncopation and walking bass, could have come straight out of mid-century Detroit.
