A gospel group led by the legendary Fred Hammond, Radical for Christ topped the charts in the ’90s and early 2000s, infusing their spiritual sound with elements of funk, soul, and R&B. ∙ After leaving gospel group Commission, Hammond formed Radical for Christ with a Detroit-area choir of young people and released Praise in the House and The Inner Court in 1995. ∙ The Inner Court reached No. 10 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart, and 1997’s Gold-certified Spirit of David LP did even better, hitting No. 2. ∙ They landed their first No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel Albums chart with 1998’s double-Platinum Pages of Life - Chapters I & II, and did it again with 2000’s Purpose By Design. ∙ In 1999, Radical for Christ’s “Let the Praise Begin” won a Dove Award for Contemporary Gospel Song of the Year, an honor they received again in 2000 for the single “Power.” ∙ Both Pages of Life - Chapters I & II and Purpose By Design earned Grammy nominations, and the latter won Contemporary Gospel Album of the Year at the 2001 Dove Awards.
