About The KBC

This UK indie rock band was formed by James Mulholland (b. Preston, Lancashire, England; guitar, vocals, keyboards), Richard Ormerod (b. Preston, Lancashire, England; bass), and Michael Brown (b. Preston, Lancashire, England; drums). The trio met while at school, and were drawn together by their love of Motown Records, house, and classic indie tunes from the 80s and 90s. After an intense period spent practising their particular instruments, the trio formed the KBC in 2004. In March 2005 ‘Trippin’’ was released on Manchester record label High Voltage Sounds, which was itself born out of a club night in Manchester dedicated to new indie rave bands. The track was released on a limited run of 7-inch vinyl, and had an immediate impact, with its dancefloor friendly intro followed by a thumping baseline, transfused with druggy lyrics, much like northern cohorts the Longcut, only less minimalist in its production. Only a few months later the KBC got their big break when they were invited to perform on the unsigned stage at Glastonbury Festival, and enjoyed prime time radio play by many indie DJs around the country. Later in 2005, and then throughout 2006, they performed support slots for indie luminaries the Strokes and ¡Forward, Russia! as well as completing gruelling tours of their own around smaller venues in the UK, building a strong fanbase and gaining a reputation as an exciting live band. During 2006 more limited tracks were released, most notably the Japan-only EP, Boxed Beats & Shelved Rhythms. Their debut album, On The Beat, released at the start of 2007 on High Voltage Sounds, took the KBC’s relentless dancefloor assault to new levels. (NB: Not to be confused with the 80s KBC Band from the USA.)
