Zeena Parkins

About Zeena Parkins

A fixture of the downtown avant garde scene since the early-‘80s, Zeena Parkins is perhaps best known for her pioneering work with the electric harp. Notorious for her unorthodox playing techniques, Parkins makes extensive use of digital and analogue processing, using guitar pedals and non-musical objects to wrest new sonic possibilities from her instrument. Initially working as a member of experimental outfits such as No Safety and Skeleton Crew, she later broadened her horizons to solo performance and large ensembles featuring artists as diverse as Bjork, Hole, Anthony Braxton, and Lee Ranaldo. She continues to collaborate with artists from a wide range of disciplines including video, film, and, most notably, dance choreographers, with whom she has composed over 30 scores.
