The Velveteen Rabbit

A charming and award-winning children's book from 1922, Margery Williams' The Velveteen Rabbit, or How Toys Become Real recounts the tale of a stuffed rabbit and his quest to become a real bunny after receiving enough love from his owner. After receiving the velveteen rabbit for Christmas, a young boy becomes attached to the toy and carries it with him wherever he goes. The velveteen rabbit learns that a toy will become real if its owner really loves it and hopes to one day transform into a real rabbit like those he and his owner visit in the meadows. One day, the boy falls ill with scarlet fever and is forced to part from his beloved toys, including the velveteen rabbit. Just as the toys are about to be burned in order to disinfect the nursery, the velveteen rabbit cries a real tear, is visited by the Magic Nursery Fairy and is made into a real bunny.
