Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Inarritu and Arriaga's first English-language film doesn't approach the brilliance of Amores Perros, but it succeeds on a more modest scale. – Carla Meyer, San Francisco Chronicle, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: If not for its show-offy back-and- forthing of time, the movie would be a banal, pointlessly depressing exercise. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Tough, smart, relentless, provocative and, above all, serious. – Stephen Hunter, Washington Post, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Establishes [Inarritu] as a major cinematic force. – Eric Harrison, Houston Chronicle, Jul 21, 2005

A Conflagration of Misery and Death

There is so much misery in this film that one is numbed by the end. Everyone is lost and no one is found. Even the del Toro character, who returns home after an confrontation with the consequences of his acts, faces deep problems. However, the technique that Inarritu uses to convey the story is well worth the watch. Cutting back and forth through time, forward and backward, he offers an opportunity for reflection that is uniquely achieved.

This movie would be great for someone with ADHD. The story was very deep and the acting was superb, but the set up of the movie bounced around like crazy. I was able to get the point but was annoyed at the constant activity.

Soul ripping, heart pounding mind blowing Movie. Tuff movie to watch, and difficult to swallow.
