Plot Summary

Filled with intense action, Annapolis is an inspirational tale of courage and honor that will keep you riveted. As hard as it is to get into the most elite military academy in the country, surviving behind its walls is beyond belief. Young Jake Huard (James Franco) has always known he has what it takes to make the grade. But once inside, everything Jake thought he knew is challenged in ways he never could have imagined. Standing between him and his lifelong ambition of becoming an officer in the U.S. Navy is his company commander -- Midshipman Lt. Cole (Tyrese Gibson), a relentless and merciless battle-seasoned Marine. Thrilling and exhilarating, Annapolis reaffirms the power of believing in your dreams.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Judging Annapolis by its most appealing attributes (among all the cliches): It's not bad superficially, but neither is it all that it could be. – Brian Lowry, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Annapolis is less like a movie than a virus -- one that clings so tenaciously to its host genre that it begins to take on the characteristics of a real movie, even though it's just faking. – Stephanie Zacharek,, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Jake [is] forced to swallow his pride and ask girly Brewster to train him. It's a marginally subversive moment in a movie that otherwise falls in line. – Ben Kenigsberg, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: While Officer is an almost-great movie, Annapolis, watered down and one degree further from inspiration, is merely an almost-good movie. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Sub-Par Boxing Movie Misrepresents USNA Experience

No, I don't have first-hand experience with the US Naval Academy, nor was I expecting a good representation, but this hackneyed boxing drama is so far-out it's impossible to suspend disbelief. James Franco gives an earnest, promising performance if he can find better material. Early in the picture his character flirts with a girl in a bar who (*surprise!*) turns out to be his superior officer when he enters the Academy. Wha... ? When she leads drills later it's hard not to laugh. If you can imagine this teensy model as a drill sergeant, congratulations, you win the egalitarianism award. James Franco later gets into a defiant stare-down with a different superior officer who is being hard on his roommate. Yeaah, that would happen... plebes can't even make *eye-contact* with upperclassmen. The boxing scenes were shot skillfully so if you are a fan of that genre you might want to check this out. If you are a military buff or are looking for a well-written drama, keep looking!

I was so embarressed by this movie. First of all it wasnt even filmed in annapolis, it was in new jersey or phili or something so the layout of the academy is sooooo WRONG. Second of all it makes annpolis look ghetto with the ship yards...THERE ARE NO SHIP YARDS its one of the richest cities in america! Finally it sucked and was about boxing???? navy isnt even famous 4 that ITS AN EMBARRESSMENT
