About the Movie

Whit Stillman’s Damsels in Distress is a wonderfully off-beat comedy about a trio of beautiful girls set out to revolutionise life at a grungy American university. Led by the dynamic Violet (Greta Gerwig), principled Rose (Megalyn Echikunwoke) and sexy Heather (Carrie MacLemore), they welcome transfer student Lily (Analeigh Tipton) into their group which seeks to help severely depressed students through a programme of donuts and tap dancing. The girls become romantically entangled with a series of men, including smooth Charlie (Adam Brody), dreamboat Xavier (Hugo Becker) and the mad frat pack of Frank (Ryan Metcalf) and Thor (Billy Magnussen) - who threaten the girls’ friendship and sanity...

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This a fun group of actors to watch, although it often seems that Stillman is unsure of what to do with them. – Wesley Morris, Boston Globe, Apr 19, 2012

Fresh: The acting and the music are delightful, the jokes arrive on schedule, and everything sort of glows. – John Anderson, Newsday, Apr 20, 2012

Fresh: The premise -- young rich people discover themselves -- recalls that of Stillman's older features, but his characteristic naturalism is replaced here by overlit scenes, a saccharine symphonic score, and a halting narrative momentum. – Tal Rosenberg, Chicago Reader, Apr 13, 2012

Rotten: Presumably meant to come off as affected in a comical way, the characters too often sound arrogant and ridiculous. Sometimes that's funny. Sometimes it's not. The ratio doesn't really work out the way you would like. – Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic, Apr 19, 2012

Customer Reviews

When I see a movie this bad, I get the slight urge to write the filmmaker and gently, in a nice way tell him/her that it is okay, they can stop making movies now. I would maybe help them find a job at a local bookstore or coffee shop and they could just lead a simple uneventful life.

Distinct Humour

I loved this movie! It does have its own distinct humour, but the characters were realistic and well developed. This is going to be the next cult film. The Sambola!

Just awful....

This movie was unbareable to watch. The actors are awful and its not funny at all.The whole entire movie was boring, not one good part. I would recommend not buying or even renting it.
