In DARLING COMPANION, Beth (Diane Keaton) saves a bedraggled lost dog from the side of the freeway on a wintry day in Denver. Struggling with her distracted, self-involved husband Joseph (Kevin Kline) and an empty nest at home, Beth forms a special bond with the rescued animal. When Joseph loses the dog after a wedding at their vacation home in the Rockies, the distraught Beth enlists the help of the few remaining guests and a mysterious young woman (Ayelet Zurer) in a frantic search. Each member of the search party is affected by the adventure, which takes them in unexpected directions – comic, harrowing, sometimes deeply emotional and ultimately towards love.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: How much more fulfilling it would have been to spend those hundred-odd minutes chasing a squirrel, taking a nap or disemboweling a stuffed animal on the living room rug.
Rotten: The dog had the right idea.
Rotten: "Darling Companion'' doesn't amount to much more than a fairly painless way for the AARP set to spend an hour and a half watching a movie with stars their own age.
Rotten: Lawrence Kasdan's fitfully amusing comedy-drama starring Diane Keaton and Kevin Kline.
bland is good sometimes
Aw c,mon people...sometimes you just need bland and syrupy and hoaky and schmoozie...I liked it
Critcs too hard on the movie
Probably all that sophistication got in the way of movie critics enjoying a simple, charming, feel good movie. Sorry folks, no sex to speak of. It's a slice of very traditional people living life. That's probably what killed it.
I almost think the critics viewed a different movie.
A dog of a movie!
Disappointing. Drags and makes you wish it would end soon! Dog was the best actor!
