Plot Summary

It's a daring and dangerous underwater adventure with Oscar-winner Cary Grant ("The Awful Truth," "Suspicion," "North by Northwest") as the captain of a U.S. submarine bound for a search and destroy mission in Tokyo harbor during WWII. Co-starring Oscar-nominee John Garfield ("Gentleman's Agreement," "The Postman Always Rings Twice"). Look for the screen debut of young John Forsythe (TV's "Dynasty" and the voice of Charlie on "Charlie's Angels"). Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay.

WWII Classic

Great piece of WWII propaganda cinema. Not necessarily a bad thing. The movie industry, at one time, actually helped the country in time of war by making films to boost public morale. Submarine movies like this were important in that in the early days of WWII, when war was going bad for the US, the public was given the impression that although the Navy had been decimated at Pearl Harbor, the war was being taken to the enemy through the submarine service. The US Navy lost 52 submarines during World War II and more than 3,500 sailors. Great performances by a cast that was tops in its era - Cary Grant, John Garfield, Alan Hale. Corny at times with over played "mom and apple pie" type references, but if you understand the attitude of the country then, in a time of all out war, it makes sense. Good study piece for cinema students for war time film making. If you like this movie, check out "Operation Pacific," another similar submarine movie with John Wayne.

One of Grant's greatest performance...I only wish I could of seen this picture in the theater.
