Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Even at its most ludicrous - when it is shouting into your ear - its sheer audacity grabs your attention. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Mar 15, 2012

Fresh: Brody, as the semi-fallen idealist, has a haggard eloquence, and Tim Blake Nelson, Christina Hendricks, and James Caan, as his colleagues, act out a bitterly funny spectrum of desolation. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Mar 14, 2012

Rotten: Everywhere you turn in Detachment, someone is trying to make you feel like hell. – Mary F. Pols, TIME Magazine, Mar 22, 2012

Rotten: [Brody] is undermined by a bloated script (from Carl Lund, a former public-school teacher) that lumbers him with bloviating asides about how we have failed our children. – Ella Taylor, NPR, Mar 15, 2012

A Visceral Awakening for the State of Education itself and its necessity.

5 Stars. Watch it. Thank me later.

This movie was profound and thought provoking. Oscar quality performances. Visceral and gripping. Like a book you could not put down. It is a bit graphic, but it touches your heart and makes you think. Superb cast and I felt like I was right there with them. Kudos!

One of the BEST movies ever!

This movie was intense, gut wrenching, simple, yet complex, depressing, and inspiring all in one. I think it is a must see for any and every one. Absolutely beautiful work from both the director and the actors.
