About the Movie
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman star as a married couple entangled in an intricate web of jealousy and sexual obsession in Stanley Kubrick's final cinematic offering. At a Christmas party hosted by wealthy, unconventional Victor Ziegler (Sydney Pollack), provocative advances and innocent flirtations arouse suspicion as high-society physician Dr. William Harford (Cruise) and his sexy wife, Alice (Kidman) watch each other from a distance. Alone later, this seemingly perfect couple confront their intimate sexual fantasies--which don't include each other. Caught between reality and illusion, jealousy and obsession, William struggles with his inner urges. Will he act on his erotic fantasies or keep them hidden deep inside? Sometimes a man can see more clearly with his Eyes Wide Shut.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: There is in Cruise a kind of passionate watchfulness and in Kidman a desperate and touching candor, and they keep drawing us past the narrative's improbabilities to its human heart.
Fresh: A riveting, thematically probing, richly atmospheric and just occasionally troublesome work, a deeply inquisitive consideration of the extent of trust and mutual knowledge possible between a man and a woman.
Fresh: This is finally a film that is better at mood than substance, that has its strongest hold on you when it's making the least amount of sense.
Rotten: At least Fellini pulled out the stops from the first minute when he wanted to get surreal. Here, realism fades into surrealism, then into outright foolishness. Morbidly paced foolishness.
Great movie, but it's not the unrated version
If this were the unrated version, I'd be more than willing to buy this movie. But since it's R, I'll pass. Still a great movie. I love anything Kubrick.
One Viewing? Awful. Multiple Viewings? Brilliant!
When I saw this when it opened in theaters, I hated it. I though it was soft porn masquerading as art. Months later, I gave it a second viewing. Then a third. Now, it's one of my all-time favorites. Each time I watch it, I find new things to appreciate. The subtle use of colors, for instance (pay attention to reds and blues); the nuances of Tom Cruise's performance (which I did not appreciate in my first viewing); even the use of music throughout.
Don't expect to love the film in your first viewing. And don't make yourself re-watch it just to accelerate the process of "getting" it; don't--you can't rush it. Once you've seen it, it'll get under your skin. You may go months without having the vaguest desire to revisit it...and then, all of a sudden, you'll feel the tug. Indulge it. Explore the film--and yourself.
