About the Movie

The waves are monsters. The dangers are epic. The competitors are insanely gutsy. Or maybe just insane. But every winter, when breakers the size of office buildings topple onto the North Shore of Oahu, the world’s top-ranked extreme surfers risk injury and worse to win surfing’s fabled Triple Crown. With jaw-dropping rides from big-wave warriors like seven-time world champion Kelly Slater, 2003 Surfer of the Year Andy Irons, the fearless Malik Joyeaux and 13-year-old phenom Jon-Jon Florence, it’s the ultimate, adrenaline-fueled battle of surfing’s mega-stars. And it’s a battle not all will survive. Captured by acclaimed director Dana Brown (Step Into Liquid), HIGHWATER is “…a breathtaking celebration of surfing excellence.” (Jeff Shannon, Seattle Times)

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Has enough magical shots of surfers standing deep in the curl, their hands rippling along the faces of giant waves, to keep you watching. – Mike Hale, New York Times, Aug 27, 2010

Fresh: There are no great emotional revelations about the fearless, free-spirited athletes profiled in the film, but these tanned-and-toned folks' deep love of surfing and mostly cheerful demeanors prove enjoyably infectious. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Sep 3, 2010

Rotten: Everyone is a saint in Brown's eyes, and few are especially interesting as a result. – Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle, Sep 2, 2010

Rotten: Surfing devotees might be impressed, but other viewers will be left wondering what all the fuss is about. – V.A. Musetto, New York Post, Aug 27, 2010
