About the Movie

Kay (Meryl Streep) and Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) are a devoted couple, but decades of marriage have left Kay wanting to spice things up and reconnect with her husband. When she hears of a renowned couple’s specialist (Steve Carell) in the small town of Great Hope Springs, she attempts to persuade her skeptical husband, a steadfast man of routine, to get on a plane for a week of marriage therapy. Just convincing the stubborn Arnold to go on the retreat is hard enough – the real challenge for both of them comes as they try to re-ignite the spark that caused them to fall for each other in the first place.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Streep fans, I think you're going to enjoy this one. I know I did. – Tom Charity,, Jan 8, 2013

Rotten: The film, a rehab job on a beached marriage, displays the most tender respect, the most exquisite tact, and yet it would be completely unwatchable -- an outright embarrassment -- with any other actors than Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep. – David Denby, New Yorker, Jan 8, 2013

Fresh: It's tough to come up with new superlatives for Meryl Streep, but the 63-year-old actress delivers her most frankly sexual performance yet in Hope Springs. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Jan 8, 2013

Fresh: Unlike the cloying contrivances of It's Complicated, Hope Springs is audacious in its commitment to subtle authenticity, never artificially upping the dramatic stakes but instead staying true to its small yet relatable story. – Richard Haridy, Quickflix, Nov 25, 2013

Pretty Good!

More of a Chick Flick than I expected considering Tommy Lee is in it. I think the people who don't like this movie is because it may hit home more than they care to admit. People who have had extended relationships will get this movie.

be great if i could watch on my HDCP computer

only lets me download the SD version, I bought the HD on my apple TV but it wont let me download the HD version to my computer, which I have used to purchase and download many HD movies in the recent past....!!!! Please fix this!

Not a movie to watch with your parents

My mom wanted to watch this with me because it had Meryl Streep in it and seemed cute. It wasn't.

Without spoiling the movie, I'll tell you there are a lot of pretty sexually graphic scenes that are not comfortable to watch with a parent. And the summary and trailers for this movie don't do a very good job of portraying just how sexually-focused this movie is.

But even if I were watching this by myself, it really wasn't that good. The funny moments were few and far between ad when they did come they weren't very funny.

If I were old and married I'd maybe watch this with my wife and have a decent time. But even that's a stretch.
