Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: A tedious World War II epic that slogs across the screen like a forced march in quicksand.
Rotten: Just about any golden age Hollywood hack could have made a zestier drama about one of the greatest rescue missions in U.S. military history.
Rotten: Divided three ways among the rangers, the prisoners and the resistance fighters in Manila, the movie feels unfocused, schematic and overpopulated.
Fresh: Not a great movie, but it certainly does justice to the great historical event it dramatizes.
When the final credits ran, the northern NJ movie audience sat silent and still. Images of real heroes rolled past us on the screen. As the last image faded, we applauded.
The film brilliantly portrays the intricate web of the lives touched by the men taken prisoner. A terrific telling of the true account of an ordinary group of men who gallantly volunteered to attempt a daring rescue against all odds. West Point professors and military leaders used the textbook perfect, easy to follow battle briefing as an example of exactly what to do.
The filming shows wide screen views of an awesome battle – not the close-up, shaky angles indicative of poorly choreographed fight scenes. Joseph Fiennes, Connie Nielsen, and Benjamin Bratt give dazzling performances that capture the combined hope and despair of the POW’s struggle and the determination of the people who risked their lives to set them free.
This is a must see movie that will touch your heart and stir the courage that lies within.
