Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: A mystery, a melodrama, a prison film, and a love story, "Incendies'' is foremost a scream of rage at a society destroyed by religion and by men.
Fresh: It is no surprise that it was nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film Oscar.
Fresh: It's a powerful, disturbing film. May there be a day when such works seem less relevant.
Fresh: Villeneuve's telling of her story - and of her children's - is painful, searing and something close to brilliant.
In short, this is one of the best films I've seen. The story is told in a wonderfully compelling manner that is both emotionally jarring and thought provoking. The plot is like that of a Greek tragedy, yet every revelation, however shocking, unfolds naturally and is true to the theme. The film, even though it deals with some of the darkest aspects of humanity, suggests the possibility of forgiveness and reconciliation. This is a complex film that is far from light entertainment, but it is highly rewarding and leaves one with much to think about.
Not one of those silly happy ending movies.
I really like it!!!
The strength of this film is that it is excruciatingly real. The setting is almost a character in itself. Some of the director's choices are just brilliant. Amazing choices. The performances are genuinely moving. They allow us to enter fully into the experience of loss as well as great acts of courage. The contrast of the fierce and fragile helps this film to excel as a film of importance. The lesson, for me, is that in the midst of terror and madness, acts of courage and grace survive. A tough and important film.
